An SR22 is a certificate your insurer files with the DMV — not a separate kind of car insurance. We get the liability coverage and get the form filed so you can drive legally again.
The certificate
A court or the DMV just ordered the filing. Here is what an SR22 actually is — and what it is not.
SR22 insurance is not actually insurance itself. It is a certificate of financial responsibility: a form your insurance company issues to the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles as proof that you carry the minimum required liability coverage. A judge or the DMV typically requires that filing after a DUI or DWI, driving without insurance, a suspended license, or a stack of serious tickets.
The filing exists to prove continuous coverage. If the policy lapses while the SR22 is required, the insurer tells the DMV. That can suspend the license again and restart the clock. Most states want two to three years on file. Some run longer after alcohol offenses.
Florida and Virginia sometimes use a stricter FR-44 after a serious DUI. If you do not own a car, a non-owner SR22 can still satisfy the form. For a national carrier explainer, see Progressive on what an SR-22 is. Your state page still controls the term.
Who needs the filing
DUI, driving without insurance, a suspended license, a high-risk record, or no car — these are the letters we see every day.

Caught driving uninsured, or an at-fault crash without a policy on the car.

The process
Four calls, not a portal. Most people start here the same day the letter arrives.
License number, violation date, and whether you own a vehicle.
Small filing fee plus the high-risk premium. We shop carriers that will file.

Do not lapse. When the term ends, ask us to remove the SR22. It does not fall off.
Cost
People also search cheapest SR22, SR22 insurance quotes, and how much SR22 insurance costs. Honest answer: the filing fee is usually a small charge. The policy is what you feel month to month.
The SR22 only proves the liability limits that state requires. Those limits — and the premium — change with the state on the letter.
DUI and uninsured driving cost more than a single lapse. The quote follows the reason the DMV ordered the filing.
No car often means a cheaper non-owner policy that still files the form. Buy a car later and switch — keep the filing continuous.

FR-44
Florida and Virginia sometimes require an FR-44 after a serious DUI. It is the same idea as an SR22 — the insurer files proof with the state — but the liability limits are usually higher, often double the state minimum. If your letter says FR-44, say that on the call. We treat those as their own quotes, not a generic SR22 insurance quote.
No vehicle
Need the filing and do not own a car? A non-owner liability policy lets the insurer file the SR22 without insuring a vehicle you do not have. That is a real product.
It does not cover a car you buy later. Switch to an owner policy if that happens, and keep the filing continuous so the DMV does not see a gap.
